PRINCIPLES OF PSYCHOLOGY (PSYC 1101)
Principles of Psychology provides an overview
of the major areas in the field of psychology. As a survey course,
we will cover many diverse areas including history, research,
biological bases, evolutionary perspectives, the brain and nervous
system, sensation and perception, learning, social and cultural
issues thinking and intelligence, memory, emotion, personality,
lifespan development, and disorders. Upon completion of the course,
you should be able to identify the major theories, theorsts,
terminology, principles, processes and methods in the above areas.
HUMAN GROWTH & DEVELOPMENT (PSYC 2103)
Human Growth and Development covers
psychological theories of physical, cognitive, emotional, and
social growth and the development of the individual throughout
the life-span. Effects
of internal and external factors from birth to death are presented
including interactions of heredity, environment, and maturational
processes. Upon completion of this course you should be able
to describe development as an ongoing set of processes involving
both continuity and change, analyze developmental events from
the major theoretical perspectives, explain how research contributes
to the understanding of growth and development, examine causes
or sources of developmental change and reasons for disturbances,
describe the developing person from birth to death, be aware
of ways in which social, political and cultural trends affect
the individual, appreciate people of all ages, cultures, and
backgounds, and to gain insights into similarities and differences
of individuals and groups.
ABNORMAL PSYCHOLOGY (PSYC 2621)
Abnormal Psychology is
a survey class of the major theoretical perspectives of abnormal
behavior, the DSM-IV, and major psychological disorders. A
variety of disorders are covered, including but not limited to,
anxiety and mood disorders, sexual disorders, personality disorders,
schizophrenic disorders, childhood and aging disorders, eating
and sleep disorders, dissociative and somatoform disorders, violence
and abuse, and treatment methods.
